6 Days Kilimanjaro Climbing Lemosho Route Tour

This day will be one of your most beautiful and longest hikes. You’ll start with a 3 to 4-hour walk to Shira 1 Camp, covering a distance of 7 km, with a lunch stop and a short break along the way. After lunch, you’ll continue your hike for another 4 to 5 hours, covering 9 km. During this section, you’ll cross the middle of the Shira Plateau, a UNESCO World Heritage site, passing through the moorland zone. You’ll arrive at the stunning overnight camp, located at the base of a massive lava flow.

You’ll continue your trek through the Alpine Desert, covering 9 km over 6 to 8 hours. The hike begins with a climb over steep hills and sparse rocks, followed by a steady uphill trek to the Lava Tower at 4,600 m, a 150-meter-high volcanic plug on the mountain’s outskirts. After reaching the tower, you’ll stop for lunch around noon.

At this altitude, some may begin to experience mild headaches due to the change in elevation. From Lava Tower, you’ll descend for about two hours, following a dusty and rocky trail, before reaching Barranco Camp for an overnight rest.

The journey to Barafu Camp covers 4 km and takes 2 to 3 hours. While the trail isn’t steep, maintaining a slow pace is crucial for acclimatization.

As you trek through the alpine desert, you’ll be treated to stunning views of Kibo Peak to your left. Just before reaching Barafu Camp, you’ll pass unique sedimentary rock formations. Please note that there is no water at Barafu Camp, so our team will carry water from Karanga Valley to meet your needs.

You will wake up around 11:00pm, have some tea and snacks and dress up warm for the summit. You will start your summit around 12:00am starting with steep rocks for about two to three hours, and then you will start crossing the zigzag area and keep moving to the crater rim and finally Stella point, 5756 meters around 06:00am. At Stella point, you will meet people from other routes like Marangu and Rongai route and join them heading to Uhuru peak about 1 hour from Stella point.

You will be able to see the sunrise at Stella point or on your way to Uhuru or at Uhuru peak 5895m, and then you will stay for 10 – 15 minutes for pictures and view, and after, descend to Barafu Campsite for resting brunch and later on descend down to Mweka Camp. You will ascent for 5km and descent for 12km, the hiking time will be 7-8 hours ascent and 4-6 hours descent to Mweka hut 3100m

After breakfast, you will begin the descent to Mweka Gate (1640m) to collect your summit certificates. The trail can be wet and muddy at lower elevations, so gaiters and trekking poles are recommended. Wear light clothing such as shorts and t-shirts, but keep rain gear and warmer layers handy. The descent covers a distance of 10 km and takes 3 to 4 hours, passing through the rain forest.

Upon reaching Mweka Gate, our vehicle will be waiting to take you back to your hotel in Moshi for a hot shower and a celebratory drink.
